Francesca Hong, who has called for universal childcare, supports a $20 minimum wage, advocates for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and opposes continued U.S. support for Israel, has faced criticism for past statements including calls to cancel Thanksgiving due to the colonial-era spread of smallpox, defund the police over concerns of reinforcing White supremacy, and abolish the Senate following the 2021 impeachment acquittal of Donald Trump.

Hong is competing in the Wisconsin Democratic primary scheduled for August 11, 2026. If she wins, she will advance to the general election in November. Her campaign emphasizes socialist policies aimed at improving lives, and she has responded to criticism by highlighting her working-class background, stating, "I've spent more time in kitchens than faculty lounges. Perhaps you'd like to come to Wisconsin and work a Friday night dinner rush with me?"

Axelrod’s comments suggest ongoing tensions within the progressive faction of the Democratic Party, with some candidates viewed as political liabilities even among their own allies.
