Jacob “Jake” Whisenant, a 30-year-old climber from Mammoth Lakes, California, died after falling in the Sierra Nevada wilderness on August 3, 2026. Authorities, including the Tulare County sheriff’s office coroner unit and the National Park Service (NPS), confirmed the incident occurred in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon wilderness.

NPS personnel responded to a climbing-related incident on August 2 and conducted rescue and recovery operations over two days before Whisenant was found deceased by rangers.

Whisenant was well-known in the climbing community for his record-setting speed ascents in Yosemite National Park. Notably, in 2024, he and climbing partner Brant Hysell completed a 2,000-foot route on El Capitan in two hours, 55 minutes, and 32 seconds—a feat Whisenant described as “a truly magical day that I’ll never forget.” In May 2026, he and another partner completed the renowned Nose route twice in one day.

Friend Bailee Moore expressed the family's devastation but found solace in knowing Whisenant died doing what he loved in the beautiful Sierra Nevada. A GoFundMe page honoring Whisenant states, “Jake Whisenant lived life with a rare sense of purpose. His passion for climbing was only a small glimpse into the kind of person he was.”
