Russia has released Robert Gilman, a former US Marine and military veteran, after more than four years of imprisonment on disputed charges and under abusive conditions. Gilman, 32, was reportedly gravely ill and had been in a dissociative stupor for 47 days prior to his release, according to Eric Lebson, chief strategy officer of the advocacy group Global Reach.

Gilman was initially sentenced to three and a half years in 2022 for allegedly beating a police officer after being removed from a train for causing a disturbance. His sentence was later extended to over ten years following convictions for assaulting prison staff.

President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that after discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia agreed to release Gilman on a humanitarian basis without any prisoner exchange. Gilman was accompanied on his flight back to the US by his mother, doctors, and administration officials.

Gilman’s family stated that his health was in a life-threatening condition due to harsh and abusive treatment during his confinement. His sister, Lexi Hudson, said, "They hurt him for no reason, other than that he was both an American and a Marine."

The US State Department confirmed that Gilman was recently determined to have been wrongfully detained and that his release was not part of any exchange or concessions.

Gilman is expected to arrive at a US military hospital in Texas for medical and psychological assessment and treatment. His mother had been in Russia attempting to visit him at a hospital prior to his release.
