Republican Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas has called for a special counsel investigation into former White House advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci following the release of private text messages discussing COVID-19 vaccine safety during pregnancy.

Marshall criticized Fauci for publicly promoting the COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant women despite behind-the-scenes concerns about potential miscarriage risks. The Senate Health Committee has referred Fauci to the Justice Department for further investigation.

The newly uncovered texts reveal discussions among Fauci and other health officials about questions surrounding the COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy. One message noted that "since many people have significant cytokines storm and fever after the 2nd dose, this theoretically could be associated with miscarriage in the 1st trimester."

Marshall, a retired obstetrician, has long challenged Fauci on COVID-19 origins, pandemic policies, and vaccine guidance, both as a senator and a physician. He emphasized the need for an independent investigation with prosecutorial power, stating, "[A special counsel has] subpoena power. They can have an independent investigation, and then they can prosecute as well."

He also remarked on the difficulty Congress faces in uncovering the truth, saying, "All Congress can do is expose the truth or try to expose the truth, which is hard to do when a guy takes the 5th 111 times."

Despite these concerns, Fauci has maintained that "with thousands of women who are pregnant, having gotten the vaccine following the EUA [emergency use authorization], there have been no red flags of anything that anyone would be worried about."

The scrutiny over Fauci's knowledge and statements during the COVID-19 pandemic continues to intensify amid these revelations.
