South Korea has shown consistent support for Ukraine in its conflict against Russian and North Korean forces. However, Ukraine’s recent request for air defence systems presents a complex challenge for Seoul.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged South Korea to provide these systems, highlighting the growing threat posed by North Korea. Zelensky warned that North Korea is gaining battlefield experience through its involvement in the war and acquiring advanced military technology from Russia, which could increase risks for Asian countries. In a social media post on Saturday, August 9th, 2026, Zelensky stated that “a decision has been made for 30,000 to 50,000 North Koreans to be deployed on the territory of Russia,” a number higher than his previous estimate of 30,000 in July.

Zelensky emphasized that South Korea should deepen its cooperation with Ukraine and expressed a desire to receive support specifically in the form of air defence systems. In exchange, Ukraine offered to assist South Korea with drone technology and other capabilities.

Analysts note that South Korea faces legal and policy restrictions on arms transfers to countries engaged in war, alongside its own defence priorities. Additionally, supplying such weapons to Ukraine could further complicate Seoul’s diplomatic relations with Russia.

As of August 11th, 2026, South Korea has yet to respond to the request, navigating a delicate balance between supporting Ukraine and managing regional security concerns.
