Tony Romo's future with CBS Sports remains uncertain following his arrest for operating while intoxicated (OWI) in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Romo was charged after deputies observed signs of impairment during a traffic stop while he was returning from a golf event. He reportedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests.

CBS Sports president David Berson addressed Romo's situation at the "NFL on CBS" Media Day on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. Berson said Romo's status is "an evolving situation" with "no timetable or final decision" as the network continues to assess the matter and weigh its brand image. Romo has been placed on indefinite leave by CBS Sports.

Romo is currently under a 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS as their top NFL analyst, signed in 2020, with approximately $72 million still owed. OutKick reported in late July that even before the arrest, there were doubts about whether CBS would retain Romo as its lead analyst beyond the 2026 NFL season.

Meanwhile, CBS Sports named Watt as their top analyst alongside play-by-play commentator Jim Nantz for the 2026 NFL season.

Berson emphasized the importance of focusing on CBS's presentation and product rather than external issues, stating, "That’s very important to us. The focus should be and needs to be on our presentation and this great product and not on any others."
