Democrats in Vermont have selected economist Amanda Janoo as their nominee to challenge Republican Governor Phil Scott in the upcoming gubernatorial election. Janoo defeated former child advocacy organization CEO Aly Richards, who was supported by former Democratic Governors Howard Dean and Madeleine Kunin, according to the Associated Press.

Governor Phil Scott, who was unopposed in securing the GOP nomination, is running for a sixth two-year term. If re-elected and he completes this term, Scott will surpass Howard Dean as Vermont’s longest-serving governor in northern New England.

Scott has proposed an $8.6 billion budget for fiscal year 2025 and has urged lawmakers not to raise taxes or fees, continuing his fiscal approach. Notably, Scott voted for then-Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, over Donald Trump in the 2024 general election.

The Democratic nomination marks the sixth consecutive attempt by Vermont Democrats to unseat the popular Republican governor in a state known for its deep blue political leaning.
