A devastating familicide occurred in Winfield, Kansas, on Tuesday, August 12th, 2026, when 53-year-old Ronald Williams Sr killed his four young children and their mother before shooting himself, authorities said. The incident marks the second familicide in the Midwest in two weeks.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Winfield Police Department reported that Williams called police at 8:50 a.m. to confess to killing his entire family and his intent to take his own life. Following standard protocol, law enforcement set up a perimeter and treated the situation as a barricade.
At 11:00 a.m., a SWAT team breached the home and found six deceased individuals: Ronald Williams Sr; 44-year-old Kelly George; and their four children—Carol Williams, nine; Ronald Williams Jr, seven; Sarah Williams, five; and Kelly Magee-Williams, three.
Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong said the department had received reports of Williams exhibiting aggressive behavior, including public confrontations and yelling over recent weeks. Officers had also responded to reports of gunfire near the family’s home but were unable to identify the source. DeLong noted that while there were some erratic behaviors, nothing indicated the severity of the outcome.
According to Kansas criminal court records, Williams had pleaded guilty in 1999 to two felony counts of attempted indecent liberties with a child and one count of battery involving a 15-year-old girl.
This tragedy follows another mass murder in the Midwest, where Kristopher Karolkiewicz, his wife Amanda, and their six children, aged five to 15, were found dead from gunshot wounds in their burning home in Grand Haven Township, Michigan. That incident was the 13th mass murder in the U.S. this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
