Weeks before the 2026 midterm elections, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.) has called for the removal or resignation of Postmaster General David Steiner. Krishnamoorthi criticized Steiner for refusing to ensure that the U.S. Postal Service complies with federal court orders related to the Trump administration’s contested mail-in voting executive order.

Two federal courts have already blocked key parts of the executive order from taking effect while litigation continues. Despite this, the Trump administration has petitioned the Supreme Court to override those rulings and allow the order to proceed, potentially changing mail-in voting rules just weeks before Election Day.

Krishnamoorthi argues that Steiner has allowed the Postal Service to become an enforcement arm of a legally disputed executive effort to alter mail-in voting rules. Steiner has reportedly declined to explain how the Postal Service will comply with court orders, reassure the public about the impartial delivery of ballots, or respond to congressional oversight inquiries.

The representative emphasized that Americans must be confident their ballots are delivered according to law, not political directives. He warned against waking up weeks before the election uncertain if voting rules have changed due to the Supreme Court’s emergency approval of an unfinished executive order administered by a postmaster general who lacks accountability.
