Prime Minister Nawaf Salam of Lebanon has condemned recent Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, calling them a "serious violation of the principles and rules of international law and international humanitarian law." Salam rejected Israel’s assertion that the villages destroyed were military sites.
Lebanon’s government accused Israel of deliberately targeting homes and civilian infrastructure across the south during a fragile ceasefire. This statement followed Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz's visit to southern Lebanon, where he claimed Israeli forces were "destroying the underground infrastructure" and "destroying all the houses."
On August 5, Israel launched strikes on the town of Mansouri after accusing the Tehran-aligned Hezbollah group of violating the ceasefire, which resulted in the deaths of two Israeli soldiers near Majdal Zoun. Lebanon has been drawn into the broader conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran since March 2, when Hezbollah launched attacks on northern Israel.
The situation remains tense with reports of Lebanese soldiers injured during Israeli troop incursions into southern towns. The future of peacekeeping efforts in southern Lebanon is uncertain as the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) approaches its phase-out.
