The welfare fraud controversy that shook Minnesota's state government late last year is expected to play a central role in the race for the state's open Senate seat, according to House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn.

Emmer predicted that the widespread fraud occurring under Governor Tim Walz's administration will negatively affect the campaign of Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan, who secured the Democratic nomination on Tuesday night. "Peggy Flanagan was there every step of the way," Emmer told Fox News Digital, adding, "She is going to be tainted by Tim Walz's disgusting reputation."

The controversy has led to indictments of roughly 80 defendants, including founder Aimee Bock. Emmer criticized the Walz administration for "fraud, incompetence and corruption," stating that Flanagan has been "front and center" during this period. He also noted that Flanagan continues to avoid accountability for the fraud issues, instead blaming the governor.

The welfare fraud case remains a significant point of contention as Minnesota voters prepare for the upcoming Senate election.
