China is reportedly increasing the missile capacity of its most advanced guided-missile frigate, the Type 054B, currently under construction in Shanghai. Satellite images taken on June 28 by US intelligence firm Vantor show a redesigned vertical launch system (VLS) at the bow of a new Type 054B vessel, differing from the configuration on the first two vessels already in service.

Previously, the Type 054B frigates were equipped with four eight-cell VLS units, totaling 32 launching cells. The new imagery reveals a six-unit structure, potentially the same eight-cell system, which would allow the vessel to carry 48 VLS cells—a 50% increase in missile capacity.

Song Zhongping, a Chinese military commentator and former People’s Liberation Army instructor, stated that the vessel is likely being fitted with this 48-cell VLS to meet the Type 054B’s need for stronger anti-saturation attack capabilities and enhanced regional air-defense. He noted, "The previous 32 cells carry a limited range of missile types, which will affect its actual combat effectiveness. Increasing the cell count would directly boost its anti-saturation defence and overall combat capability."

The new Type 054B frigate is still being outfitted at the Hudong Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai. This upgrade comes amid regional security concerns voiced by countries including Australia and Japan.
