The Tacoma Police Department conducted a six-day rescue operation beginning August 6, 2026, to save 60 cats and kittens from an abandoned 40-foot sailboat anchored off Owen Beach, Washington. Initially, officers discovered more than 30 cats living in unsafe conditions aboard the vessel, many appearing frightened and malnourished.

The Marine Services Unit coordinated with Animal Control and the department's Forensics Unit to safely remove the animals. Over the course of the operation, the number of rescued cats grew to 60.

More than 40 of the cats were taken to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County, while the remaining animals were placed in foster homes in the area. Despite believing all cats had been rescued, police stated they would continue making trips to the boat as a precaution, acknowledging that "cats are exceptionally good at hiding."

The police expressed appreciation for the community's concern and support for the animals. One update from the department confirmed, "That's a wrap! The final cat is off the boat. Fur real this time!"
