President Donald Trump has ordered all American flags to be flown at half-staff for one week in honor of Dolly Parton, the country music legend who died on Tuesday, August 25th, 2026, at the age of 80.

Trump expressed his condolences and admiration on Truth Social, writing, “There has never been anyone like her and never will.” He further hailed Parton as “one of the greatest country music singers, and far beyond, ever,” adding, “Rest in Peace, Dolly! The World loves you.”

The directive to lower flags applies to all federal buildings, military bases, U.S. embassies abroad, naval vessels, and other government properties.

Reflecting on Parton's widespread influence, Trump noted, “My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you. She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family, whether you liked it or not.”

Parton had reportedly declined the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, on three occasions. In a 2021 interview with NBC’s "Today" show, she explained, “I couldn’t accept it because my husband was ill and then they asked me again about it and I wouldn’t travel because of the COVID.” She also expressed hesitation about accepting the award later, saying, “Now I feel like if I take it, I’ll be doing politics, so I’m not sure.”

Trump concluded his tribute by saying, “Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus.”
