Earlier this year, a survey found that Canada, along with Switzerland, was the best-liked country in the world, known for its friendly and polite reputation. However, recent trade tensions have strained relations between Canada and the US.

US President Donald Trump described Canada as “difficult and unreasonable” after trade talks collapsed. Despite earlier claims from Trump that a deal was imminent to avoid new tariffs, negotiations fell apart due to what Canada described as unreasonable, last-minute demands from the US side.

As a result, US tariffs took effect on Saturday, targeting various Canadian exports including hockey sticks and tongue depressors. Trump had sought more favorable terms on steel and aluminum but was met with resistance.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, noted for standing up to Trump, said Canada had been “attacked” and announced retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of US goods. These include steel, dairy products, appliances, and farm equipment.

Lauren Aratani reported that the US accounts for more than 20% of global tissue consumption despite having only 4% of the world’s population, highlighting the significance of trade in such products.

This escalating trade conflict underscores the challenges in US-Canada relations amid tariff disputes.
