China is accelerating the development and commercialisation of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology by drafting extensive standards and fostering domestic innovation. On Wednesday, August 26th, 2026, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released draft guidelines aiming to formulate or revise over 40 standards by 2028 and encourage adoption by at least 100 companies.
The initiative also includes plans to lead or participate in creating more than 10 international standards. By 2030, China targets developing over 80 standards to build a comprehensive domestic framework and enhance its influence on global neural technology regulations.
Brain-computer interfaces enable direct communication between the brain and external devices, with applications ranging from restoring movement and speech in disabled individuals to controlling computers and industrial machinery.
Under its 15th five-year plan, China has identified BCI technology as one of six “industries of the future,” seeking to nurture domestic competitors in a field where Elon Musk’s Neuralink is widely seen as a commercial frontrunner.
Leading Chinese neural-tech companies include Neuracle, which has received approval for an implanted system aiding paralysed patients in regaining hand movement; StairMed and NeuroXess, focusing on invasive implants and neural signal interpretation; and BrainCo, which develops non-invasive devices and brain-controlled prosthetics.
This strategic push reflects Beijing’s ambition to establish global leadership in neural technology standards and innovation.
