China has announced ambitious plans to develop emerging high-tech industries as key drivers of economic growth by 2030. Vice-minister of Industry and Information Technology Xin Guobin outlined a strategy to establish new economic pillars through advancements in next-generation 6G communications, quantum technology, brain-computer interfaces, nuclear fusion, and robotics.
At a press conference hosted by the State Council Information Office on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Xin emphasized the focus on "developing new quality productive forces and integrating technological and industrial innovation to promote high-quality development."
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also plans to accelerate the commercialization of artificial intelligence in manufacturing, particularly embodied AI—systems enabling robots and automated machines to perceive, learn from, and interact with their environment. Liu Yulin, head of the ministry’s information and communications development department, identified next-generation 6G communications as a "top priority," with efforts to fast-track core technology research, conduct trials, and develop industry standards for future commercial deployment.
These initiatives come amid ongoing economic challenges in China, including sluggish consumer spending, a prolonged property sector slump, and industrial overcapacity in sectors such as electric vehicles (EVs). Beijing has also pledged renewed efforts to curb cutthroat competition within the domestic automotive industry.
Internationally, China faces intense competition in advanced technologies and increased scrutiny of its export sector, including clean energy products. The government’s focus on technological self-reliance and industrial upgrading aims to sustain growth in this complex environment.
