Rockhampton electrician Wayne Harris and other local employers are facing significant difficulties after Electro Group, a not-for-profit training organisation, announced in April 2026 it would cease operations in Rockhampton. More than 80 apprentices enrolled with Electro Group are now left without a clear path to complete their electrotechnology qualifications.

Mr. Harris reported that the only alternative for apprentices, particularly those in their fourth year, is to finish their training at their own expense, often requiring travel to Brisbane. He stated, "The government's offered a little bit of incentive money, but it's nowhere near enough."

Attempts to enrol apprentices at CQUniversity, which amalgamated with TAFE in 2014, have been unsuccessful due to full intakes and scheduling conflicts. Mr. Harris noted, "We can't get the first years now into their studies and into their blocks because they [the university] can't accept them," and employers "couldn't get their training notices on time" or have them suit their operational hours.

Queensland Employment and Training Minister Ros Bates confirmed that Electro Group's decision to stop operating in Rockhampton was theirs alone and did not address funding questions.

CQUniversity acknowledged the uncertainty faced by apprentices affected by the closure and stated it is collaborating with the Queensland government to secure training pathways for the state's future electrical workforce.
