Grave concerns remain as hundreds of people are reported missing following devastating flash floods that struck mountainous areas along the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

The death toll has risen to at least 100, with police in Nepal recovering 157 bodies on their side of the border. Despite these recoveries, hundreds remain unaccounted for.

A Nepali tourism official reported that 403 people are missing, including 341 foreign nationals. Among the missing are 34 Australians, according to a list provided by Sunil Sharma, a tourism board spokesman. Other foreign nationals reported missing include 133 Indians on a pilgrimage to a Hindu sacred site, 47 Americans, 33 British nationals, and 24 Canadians.

On the Tibetan side, in Gyirong County, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported at least three deaths and 265 people missing.

Additionally, a Nepali police spokesman told The Associated Press that at least 28 police officials are among those unaccounted for.

The Himalayan region affected is popular with tourists, heightening concerns over the number of foreigners missing in the disaster.
