SYDNEY — Japan is actively seeking to attract financial services firms and diverse investments from Australia, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama announced on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. Speaking at the fourth Nikkei Asia Forum in Sydney, Katayama emphasized the critical role of Australia-Japan relations amid growing geopolitical tensions.
Katayama described Australia as an "indispensable" source of energy and minerals and characterized the bilateral ties as a "stabilizing power in the region" during a period of increasing fragmentation. She encouraged investors to leverage Japanese reforms aimed at easing entry for overseas firms, noting that over 50 foreign financial institutions, including those from Australia, have entered Japan in the past five years.
"As we deepen cooperation in the real economy, the role of finance in supporting investment and capital flows becomes ever more important," Katayama said in a video message to forum attendees. She added, "Through continued reform, we will pursue sustainable growth and long-term value creation. I hope these efforts will deepen economic and financial cooperation between Japan and Australia and contribute to our shared prosperity."
The forum focused on the future of Australia-Japan relations in a rapidly changing and volatile global environment.
