A rare 1920 painting by Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, titled Composition III, will be auctioned at Christie’s in London this October. The abstract piece has not been seen in public for more than 25 years and is estimated to sell for between £20 million and £30 million during the auction house’s Frieze Week sale.
The painting represents a key moment in Mondrian’s career as he transitioned from traditional landscapes to pure abstraction, characterized by bold blocks of primary color and straight black lines, hallmarks of his neoplastic style. The last Mondrian painting of this significance sold in 2009, making this a rare opportunity for collectors.
Christie’s aims for the sale to set a new record for the artist, whose current highest auction price stands at $51 million.
