A 7-year-old boy was left alone at approximately 8,000 feet on Mt. Fuji after complaining of tiredness during a hike with his father and older brother. Instead of turning back or taking a break with his son, the father instructed the boy to "wait here" and continued the ascent with his older son, according to an ABC news affiliate in North Carolina.

At around 7:40 a.m. local time on Thursday, August 26, 2026, a mountain hut worker spotted the exhausted boy sitting on a bench and contacted police. Authorities then reached out to the father to reunite him with his son.

The father later expressed remorse, stating, "I made a rash decision, and I deeply regret it."

This incident highlights concerns about safety and parental responsibility during strenuous activities like hiking. One commentator noted, "As a father, I get a little nervous leaving my son in front of the TV for 20 seconds to go grab the laundry out of the dryer, so I couldn't imagine telling my young child to chill on the side of a mountain while I finish my hike."

Separately, police reported that three bodies were found inside a crater at the summit of Mt. Fuji on June 27, 2024, underscoring the mountain's potential dangers.
