Severe flooding in China and Nepal on Wednesday, August 26th, 2026, has caused widespread destruction and a rising number of fatalities, according to reports from United Nations agencies. The floods have damaged settlements, markets, roads, bridges, and hydropower infrastructure, with many roads cut off and electricity disrupted, the UN humanitarian agency OCHA stated.

UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that UN agencies and humanitarian partners are actively supporting local authorities in both countries. The UN Secretary-General expressed sorrow over the floods, which have claimed many lives, left people missing, and caused extensive damage.

In Nepal, authorities estimate that approximately 10,000 households require immediate relief. UN Resident Coordinator Lila Pieters Yahia is coordinating relief efforts alongside partners to support the government-led response to meet the significant humanitarian needs.

Humanitarian organizations are mobilizing rapidly: Save the Children has deployed staff to the flood-affected Nuwakot district, and the Nepalese Red Cross has sent 200 emergency shelter packages. Additionally, two staff members from the World Health Organization (WHO) are on site with medical kits sufficient for about 10,000 people for three months, along with tents and logistical support.

The humanitarian community remains on standby to provide further assistance as the full scale of the disaster becomes clearer.
