A Nicaraguan immigrant, Luis Manuel Aviles Roa, who was detained by Border Patrol agents while his son served more than nine months deployed in the Middle East, has been released from immigration custody. Roa, who has lived in the United States for nearly two decades, was reunited with his family following his release, his family announced on Tuesday, August 26, 2026.

Roa's son is a sailor aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The detention and subsequent release of Roa highlight ongoing immigration enforcement issues faced by families of U.S. military personnel.
