The Brazilian government has filed a $97 million lawsuit against the chat platform Discord, accusing it of failing to protect children and teenage users on its social media service. The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, August 27, 2026, follows unsuccessful negotiations between Brazil and Discord.

In a statement, the government said the lawsuit aims to compel Discord to implement effective measures to safeguard children, adolescents, and women in the digital environment, while seeking compensation for "collective moral damages."

The case gained public attention in July 2026 after a tragic incident in the western state of Mato Grosso do Sul, where a 13-year-old girl killed herself during a livestream after being pressured by a group of teenagers.

Discord, which hosts about 90 million active daily users globally, responded by announcing it would stop streaming services and take steps "to make Discord safer for teens."

This lawsuit is part of Brazil's broader efforts to regulate tech giants over child safety issues online, following recent actions such as fining TikTok $30 million for child data privacy violations and Meta's settlement over youth addiction concerns.
