A man drove a car into a group of pedestrians near a train station in Caen, northern France, late on Wednesday, August 27th, 2026, killing one person and injuring ten others. Authorities reported that seven of the injured were in critical condition while three had minor injuries.

The incident occurred around 10:15 pm local time (2015 GMT) and is believed to have followed a fight at a nearby bar. Local prefect David Claviere stated that the car "deliberately drove into pedestrians in the street opposite the train station."

The suspect, a 26-year-old man born in Russia, was arrested approximately 20 kilometers away in the port town of Ouistreham. Police noted he was not previously known to intelligence services and had only been known for traffic offenses.

All victims appeared to be men between the ages of 17 and 40, according to Bruno Coutanceau, a top security official for Caen. Police have opened an investigation on charges of murder and aggravated assault, led by Caen's Specialised Crime Division.

Authorities have stated that, for the moment, they are not treating the incident as having a terrorist motive, but the investigation is ongoing.
