A Fox News Digital review revealed that the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, which welcomes about 2 million visitors annually and conducts global conservation research in over 40 countries, has increasingly emphasized diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and climate change in its programming and messaging.
According to the Zoo's website, a 2021 article by seabird ecologist Autumn-Lynn Harrison and coral biologist Mary Hagedorn stated, "Gender equity, civil liberties and justice are necessary ingredients for peace and prosperity, but they also have a direct impact on resource use and climate change." The article argued that addressing global inequities in health and education can bolster climate action. Searches for "climate change" on the Zoo’s website return nearly 400 results, including warnings about its effects on various wildlife habitats.
The 2023 Smithsonian Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives Report highlights that diversity and inclusion are integral to all Smithsonian operations and strategic plans, with specific DEI programs at the Zoo such as diversity-focused internships, LGBTQ family programming featuring rainbow-themed animal enrichment, and efforts to promote inclusive language within the zoo and aquarium professions.
In January 2025, the Smithsonian announced it was eliminating its Office of Diversity in alignment with the Trump administration’s efforts but stated it would retain visitor accessibility initiatives due to their critical function.
Critics argue that conservation efforts have been "infiltrated by elements of DEI, ESG, and climate alarmism," which they say causes confusion and division in what should be a science-first space. It was also noted that "Americans visit zoos to learn about conservation efforts and admire animals, not to be shamed or feel guilt-ridden."
Brandie Smith, the current director of the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, joined the Smithsonian in 2008 after a decade as the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ vice president of animal conservation.
