Donald Trump’s 2024 voter coalition, which included white voters without college degrees, rural voters, men, white evangelicals, and notable gains among Hispanic, Black, younger men, and low-propensity voters, was held together by a shared sense of desperation for order and economic relief, according to pollsters speaking to the Daily Caller.

With Trump off the ballot in the 2026 midterms, the durability of this coalition will be tested. Robert Cahaly, founder of the Trafalgar Group, emphasized the challenge of motivating non-propensity voters who turned out in 2024, stating, “Trump will need to be heavily involved in the midterms if he wants to motivate those guys.”

Economic concerns remain prominent, as nearly 60 percent of Americans report changing their eating habits due to rising grocery prices. Additionally, Trump’s job approval rating hit a low of 39 percent on August 4, 2026, amid U.S. military involvement in the Middle East and inflation pressures.

Healthcare has become a strategic focus for Republicans. Top Trumpworld officials, including James Blair, pollster Tony Fabrizio, and Senate Leadership Fund executive director Alex Latcham, advised Senate candidates in mid-August to emphasize healthcare issues. Axios reported that Republicans hold a 46-point advantage when highlighting “more transparency around insurers’ profits, claim denials and wait times for patient care while hitting Democrats for lining insurers’ pockets.”

Cahaly noted potential gains for the Trump administration in healthcare messaging, suggesting it allows Republicans to criticize the existing system: “They can say, ‘Hey, [Obama] created a whole system that just basically let insurance companies make a huge profit.’”

The 2026 midterms will thus serve as a critical test of whether Trump’s coalition, driven by demands for economic and domestic policy changes, can maintain its influence without him on the ballot.
