Za'Darius Smith, a three-time Pro Bowl defensive end, faced a difficult period last year after abruptly stepping away from the NFL. Within months, he lost three close family members: his mother, grandmother, and father.

The 33-year-old, who had played for six different franchises over 11 seasons, was ready to retire when he left the Philadelphia Eagles mid-season in October 2025. However, after visiting with the Cleveland Browns, Smith reached a deal with the Atlanta Falcons, marking his seventh NFL team.

Smith described football as a sanctuary during this challenging time, saying, "Come back, play football. I was in a dark place, but, you know, coming out, running out on the field, the fans, not just the fans, man, the joy that I get from winning and just getting sacks."

He also shared a personal motivation for joining the Falcons: "My mom, rest her soul, man, she always wanted me to be in Atlanta with the Falcons."

Looking ahead, Smith expressed his determination to continue his career, stating, "Now I'm trying to reach 100. However I need to do that, I'm going to try."

Meanwhile, the Falcons selected two pass rushers in the NFL's 2025 draft, but neither may be available to start the 2026 season, potentially increasing Smith's role on the team.
