Its geological formation dates back millions of years: over thousands of years, layers of limestone and shells formed caves, gateways, and towers, which were repeatedly eroded by the Southern Ocean. The coast also served as a habitat for indigenous groups in the region, including the Wergaia and Eastern Maar communities. From the 1950s/60s onwards, the area was designated a protected area to preserve its exceptional geology, wildlife, and flora and to manage visitor flows in a sensible manner. Special features include the famous limestone cliffs, narrow passages, natural bridges, and steep cliffs; highlights such as the Twelve Apostles , Loch Ard Gorge, and other coastal formations attract many visitors each year. The sea is home to seals, seabirds, and rich marine fauna, while the rocky shores also support maritime flora. Hiking trails, lookout points, and boat tours offer insights into geology, geomorphology, and coastal protection—a harmonious combination of natural wonders and historical perspective.
