Rode my bike up an old logging road to Fragrance Lake in Larabee State Park just south of my home in Bellingham, WA.. Road is blocked off to cars and makes a nice hill climb. I think around 1,000 elevation gain. Going at a steady pace it can be meditative; especially listening to the radio. Big news on the radio from Canada; British Columbia that is. They recently had an election. Their two most liberal mainstream parties did well. The Greens and the New Democrats (NDP). Today's news was that the two parties decided to do a coalition government combining forces which puts them in the majority. I'm a bit rusty on Canadian parliamentary politics, but it means the Liberals, which is a moderate party, are now in the minority. The Premier of BC may have to step down. The majority, created by this new coalition, is a majority of only one vote in the parliament. That means if a member of parliament goes to the restroom at the wrong time and misses a vote, it could bring down the government. They were kind of joking about that. I wish our politics, here in USA, was as fluid as the Canadian system. If we don't like our leaders, we are stuck with them for too long. In Canada, they can call an election, have no confidence votes and so forth. Looks like liberal and environmental forces are gaining strength up in BC. By co-incidence the big Canadian pipeline company, Kinder Morgan, that wants to enlarge the pipeline from Alberta to Vancouver area is going to Toronto Stock Exchange tomorrow (Tuesday) to try and raise 2 billion dollars for the project. There's speculation that the left and Green turn in BC politics might make it even harder to build that pipeline. How will that effect the stock offering? The radio is full of talk. A nice contrast as I pedal my way up the grade through cool forests.
