John Fetterman (D-Pa.) pointed to weaknesses in President Trump’s influence in Congress amid opposition from three outgoing Republican senators to the president’s nomination of acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to a permanent role overseeing the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Thom Tillis (N.C.), Bill Cassidy (La.) and John Cornyn (Texas) have all expressed skepticism about Blanche’s nomination amid questions about the status of a controversial “anti-weaponization fund” created under his watch.
“I don’t see him being confirmed at least certainly through the end of the year, honestly,” Fetterman told CNN’s Kasie Hunt on Friday. “Trump has zero leverage, whether it’s Cornyn or Cassidy or Tillis or these senators that are leaving.”
Tillis and Cornyn hold critical votes required to advance Blanche’s nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee, where the acting attorney general can lose only one Republican vote.
