A man named Dan Sullivan, sharing both the name and Republican party affiliation of Alaska US Senator Dan Sullivan, has been ruled eligible to challenge the incumbent in the upcoming August primary. This decision was made by Superior Court Judge Thomas Matthews on June 27, 2026, overturning an earlier June 15 ruling by Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher that disqualified the challenger from the primary ballot.
The challenger, a retired teacher from the small fishing community of Petersburg, filed to run against Senator Sullivan. Judge Matthews found that the Division of Elections' exclusion of Dan J. Sullivan on grounds that his candidacy was not "in good faith" was unsupported by the Constitution, Alaska law, or the division's regulations. Instead, the judge noted the decision was based on a new, previously unstated "good faith" criterion.
Matthews' ruling can be appealed to the Alaska Supreme Court. State lawyers have indicated that Tuesday is the deadline for a final ruling to ensure ballots can be printed for the August 18 primary.
