Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York emphasized the importance of transparency among public officials regarding prolonged absences after House Republican Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey revealed that his recent months-long absence from Congress was due to treatment for depression.
Kean, who had missed House votes for several months, disclosed the reason for his absence during a speech on the House floor on June 30, 2026. He shared that several months ago, he was hospitalized for testing related to health concerns and was diagnosed with depression. Kean acknowledged the ongoing nature of recovery, stating, "Only the work of getting better one day at a time."
Torres, who has personal experience with depression, expressed sympathy for those struggling with mental illness. In a post on X, he wrote, "As someone who has lived with depression, I have deep sympathy for anyone struggling with mental illness. I might not be alive today were it not for a prolonged hospitalization and proper medication. I know the value of taking a medical leave firsthand."
He further stressed that "public officials have an obligation to be transparent about lengthy absences," noting that "transparency deepens the public’s empathy, whereas secrecy breeds suspicion. When in doubt, err on the side of transparency. Tell the truth, and tell it early. The public is often most forgiving of those who level with them."
Kean’s return to Congress and his candid disclosure highlight the challenges faced by many Americans dealing with mental health issues, with over 48 million reportedly receiving treatment nationwide.
