On July 2, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI has discussed giving a 5 percent stake to the U.S. government. This proposal comes as AI companies face increased scrutiny in Washington regarding the potential misuse of advanced models and questions about whether Americans would benefit from the industry's substantial valuations. It remains unclear if other AI firms are willing to offer similar stakes.

OpenAI and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Separately, a source familiar with the matter stated that the Trump administration and AI company Anthropic have not discussed the government taking stakes in Anthropic. The White House, the Commerce Department, and Anthropic also did not respond to requests for comment.
