Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed criticism from US President Donald Trump regarding Germany’s defence spending, stating that Germany does not need to shy away from highlighting its record. Trump had called Germany’s past defence efforts “ridiculous” and claimed on social media that Germany’s spending between 2014 and 2025 was "MUCH LOWER" than that of the US or other NATO allies.
Merz emphasized that Germany is currently doubling its defence budget within four years, describing it as the greatest effort ever made to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities. He added, “In this respect, we have no reason to shy away from anyone,” and noted Germany’s responsibility as the European Union’s largest member state.
The issue of defence spending is a key topic as NATO leaders prepare to meet in Ankara next week. Europeans aim to move past disagreements with Trump over issues like Iran and Greenland and demonstrate their commitment to defending the continent. Last year in The Hague, NATO leaders agreed to increase defence spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2035, up from a previous target of 2%.
Trump’s social media posts criticized NATO allies for what he described as a one-sided defence spending relationship with the US, calling it “ridiculous.”
