A court in Tirana, Albania, has released 19 protesters who were detained during violent demonstrations against a resort project linked to US President Donald Trump's family. The protesters had been held on suspicion of refusing to obey police orders, organizing illegal demonstrations, and disturbing public order, according to their lawyer.
Lawyer Dorian Matlija stated that two of the released protesters will be placed under house arrest, while 12 others must report to judicial police once or twice a month. The announcement was met with cheers from dozens of supporters gathered outside the court chanting “Free the boys.”
The protests escalated after barbed-wire fencing and bulldozers appeared on beaches in late May, despite the resort being first unveiled in 2024. During the clashes, 15 police officers were injured and 25 demonstrators detained.
The resort development has become a focal point of anti-government protests in Albania, reflecting broader tensions over the Kushner-backed coastal project.
