After nearly two decades of governing the Gaza Strip, Hamas has announced it will dissolve its government and transfer power to a new Palestinian technocratic governing authority. This transition comes amid a stalled United States-backed peace process and ongoing Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
Hamas’s head of administration, Mohammed al-Farra, resigned on Monday, and power is being handed over to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), a Palestinian-run technical committee supported by the United Nations as part of the US-mediated ceasefire. The NCAG is expected to oversee civilian affairs including health, education, and security.
Analysts suggest Hamas aims to pressure Israel and appeal to US President Donald Trump by demonstrating a commitment to peaceful governance and reconstruction of Gaza. According to Shehada, Hamas hopes Trump will view the dissolution positively and recognize Israel as the sole party obstructing the Trump 20-point peace plan.
Shehada also noted that Hamas likely seeks to prevent Israel’s plans to confine any future administration to a limited area of Gaza, referred to by Israeli officials as “New Rafah,” while Israel maintains control over most of the Strip.
Meanwhile, Israeli attacks on Gaza continue, with at least six fatalities reported amid ongoing ceasefire violations. In the West Bank, Israeli official Smotrich has declared a “revolution” in settlement expansion.
