Chinese banks and technology companies have taken the lead globally in financial technology (fintech) patent filings over the last decade, surpassing the United States. According to a report by Nikkei Asia, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) and Tencent were among the top five companies worldwide in fintech patent applications.

This surge represents a tenfold increase from the previous decade, highlighting China's expanding role in innovations that support a broad spectrum of financial services, including lending, asset management, and cryptocurrencies. The trend was noted in Tokyo and reflects a strategic push by Chinese firms to dominate the fintech landscape.
