In late June 2026, a public park near the European Commission buildings in Brussels hosted celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The event featured beer, grilled meat, and country music, including a performance by the American band Zac Brown Band.

However, the festivities revealed underlying tensions between the US and its European allies. Only three of the European Union’s 27 commissioners attended, and none of the EU’s leaders were present. Authorities were also reportedly investigating whether fireworks used during the event caused damage to historic buildings in the park.

The event was further overshadowed by a media incident involving US ambassador to Belgium Bill White. Two reporters from the news start-up The European Correspondent approached White to question him about allegedly sending threatening emails to them. The emails purportedly accused the reporters of urging the Zac Brown Band not to perform at the event.

Following White's refusal to answer their questions, the reporters were reportedly "roughly" ejected from the party by Belgian police, who described the journalists as an "active threat."

These incidents underscore ongoing strains in US-Europe relations, raising questions about Europe's ability to navigate the complexities of America's political landscape post-Trump.
