Tokyo Artisan Intelligence, a Japanese AI chip startup, is set to mass-produce its own chips in 2027 with support from Malaysian design house Oppstar. The collaboration aims to serve niche markets such as railways, factories, and robotics, positioning the startup outside the dominant data center AI chip market led by global giants like Nvidia.

The partnership was formalized in a signing ceremony in Kuala Lumpur in June, where Tokyo Artisan Intelligence CEO Hiroki Nakahara and Oppstar co-CEO Ng Meng Thai met to solidify their cooperation. This move reflects Tokyo Artisan Intelligence's strategy to carve out a space for smaller AI chip players in Asia's competitive semiconductor landscape.

According to Nikkei Asia, the startup is confident there is room for specialized AI chips beyond the mainstream data center applications, leveraging Oppstar's design expertise to ramp up production capabilities.
