At least 16 people remain buried following a landslide in the mountainous area of Gansu province in western China. Initially, 33 individuals were trapped, and 17 have been successfully rescued, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
The country has experienced damaging thunderstorms resulting in at least 275 injuries, Xinhua reported.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered an all-out effort to rescue those affected by the natural setback, CCTV said.
The National Meteorological Centre warned that the southeastern region of Guangxi and the eastern provinces of Jiangsu and Shandong should prepare for extremely heavy rainfall of up to 260mm in the next 24 hours, which could trigger further landslides. Other areas in northeastern and southern China are also expecting tornadoes.
Separately, the US National Weather Service reported winds reaching up to 290 km/h (180 mph) as a storm moved across Guam, Tinian, Saipan, and Rota on Monday.
