At least two explosive devices went off in central Damascus on July 7, 2026, near the hotel where French President Emmanuel Macron was staying during his visit to Syria. Syrian media reported that 18 people, including four police officers, were injured in the blasts. A security source told the BBC that the explosions caused several injuries.

The explosions occurred in an area busy with civilians, near the Ministry of Tourism and on Shoukry al-Quowatly street, a major thoroughfare in the capital. Television footage showed plumes of smoke rising over the city, and a vehicle was seen on fire.

Despite the blasts, Macron was safe and did not hear the explosions while on his way to a meeting with Syrian counterpart Ahmed al-Sharaa at the presidential palace. Syrian state television confirmed that al-Sharaa welcomed Macron at the palace, and the Elysee Palace stated that the visit continued as planned.

Authorities have sealed off roads in the area and launched an investigation into the incident. The situation at the presidential palace was reported as "pretty calm" by Al Jazeera's correspondent Obaida Hitto.

Last week, a separate explosion at a cafe in central Damascus killed at least nine people and wounded 20 others, according to Syria's Ministry of Health.

Macron is expected to continue his trip by heading to Turkey for the NATO summit.
