Mitch McConnell’s office circulated an email on July 7 compiling statements from senators and acquaintances who said they spoke with the former Senate majority leader for similar durations and discussed related topics. The email did not provide new information about McConnell’s health.
McConnell has been hospitalized since June 14 after paramedics found him unconscious at his Washington, D.C. residence and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) following a cardiac arrest. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told the Daily Caller News Foundation on June 15 that McConnell was "dialed in" on legislative conference calls and sounded well on the phone.
A spokesperson for McConnell said, “Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital. The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
McConnell announced in December 2024 that he would step down as the Senate’s Republican leader after nearly two decades in the role. In February 2025, he decided not to seek reelection when his current term expires in January 2027.
