NATO leaders gathered in Ankara on July 7, 2026, for a summit following a turbulent six months marked by diplomatic challenges and pressure from the United States to increase defense spending. The summit aims to ease tensions with former President Donald Trump, who has criticized NATO allies for their comparatively low defense budgets. On July 3, Trump posted a graphic on his Truth Social platform highlighting the disparity between the US defense spending of $999 million (£747 million) and smaller contributions from European states, calling the situation “ridiculous” and “one-sided.”
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged member countries to present “clear, concrete and credible plans” to meet the organization's spending targets, emphasizing that Trump expects all allies to promptly move toward spending 5% of their GDP on defense.
Tensions between the US and NATO allies have been exacerbated by several actions from Trump, including his threat to take control of Greenland from Denmark, failure to consult European leaders before the US and Israel launched an economically damaging attack on Iran, and complaints that countries such as the UK did not permit US jets to bomb Iran from their territories. Trump has also accused Italy’s Giorgia Meloni of being obsessed with him and strained relations with Canada’s Mark Carney after expressing interest in a takeover of Canada.
In a separate development, Maine Senate candidate Platner faces allegations of sexual assault. An exclusive report by Politico detailed claims from Jenny Racicot, 41, who previously dated Platner, alleging he forced her to have sex despite repeated objections. The report included accounts from a confidant, recent therapist emails, and warnings Racicot issued to an acquaintance in 2023. Platner has denied the allegations, calling them “troubling, serious, and false” and stating that any accusation of non-consensual behavior is “categorically untrue.”
Maine’s Democratic party leadership, including Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic senatorial campaign committee chair Kirsten Gillibrand, have called on Platner to immediately withdraw from the race, warning that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will not invest in the Maine Senate race if he remains on the ballot.
Additionally, the US plans to reduce the number of troops and materiel assigned to Europe in the event of a war with Russia, adding another layer of complexity to NATO's defense posture.
