NATO leaders gathered in Ankara on July 7, 2026, for a summit marked by diplomatic challenges, particularly in managing relations with former US President Donald Trump. Washington continues to pressure NATO allies to increase their defense spending, with Trump publicly criticizing European members for their comparatively low budgets. On July 3, Trump posted a graphic on his Truth Social platform highlighting NATO members' defense expenditures, contrasting the US's $999 million spend with much smaller figures from European states, calling the situation “ridiculous” and “one-sided.”
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte urged allies to present “clear, concrete and credible plans” to meet spending targets, emphasizing that Trump expects all members to promptly move toward dedicating 5% of their budgets to defense.
Tensions between the US and other NATO members have been exacerbated by several actions attributed to Trump, including his threat to take control of Greenland from Denmark, failure to consult European leaders before the US and Israel launched an economically damaging attack on Iran, and complaints that countries like the UK did not permit US jets to bomb Iran from their territories. Additionally, Trump has accused Italy’s Giorgia Meloni of being obsessed with him and strained relations with Canada’s Mark Carney after expressing interest in a takeover of Canada.
The US is also planning to reduce the number of troops and materiel it assigns to Europe in the event of a war with Russia.
Separately, Maine’s Democratic party leadership has called for Senate candidate Platner to withdraw from the race following allegations reported exclusively by Politico. Jenny Racicot, 41, who previously dated Platner, accused him of forcing her to have sex despite repeated objections. The report referenced accounts from a confidant, recent therapist emails, and messages where Racicot warned an acquaintance about Platner in 2023. Platner has denied the allegations, stating, “These allegations are troubling, serious, and false. Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue.”
In response to the allegations, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic senatorial campaign committee chair Kirsten Gillibrand jointly stated that Platner should “immediately withdraw” and noted that the DSCC will not invest in the Maine Senate race if he remains on the ballot.
