Real Sociedad have extended head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo's contract until the end of the 2027-28 season, the La Liga club announced on July 7. The decision comes after Matarazzo led the Basque club to win the Copa del Rey title within his first months in charge, making him the first American head coach to win a major trophy in one of Europe's top five leagues.
Matarazzo joined Real Sociedad in December when the team was near the La Liga relegation zone. Under his guidance, the club finished 10th with 46 points. The Copa del Rey victory over Atletico Madrid also secured Real Sociedad a place in next season's Europa League.
Reflecting on his connection with the club, Matarazzo said, "I connected very well with the people of Gipuzkoa, with the players, with the people at the club. I share similar values with them, which makes it easier to connect."
Real Sociedad will begin their 2026-27 La Liga campaign away to Real Madrid on August 17 at the Santiago Bernabeu.
