The governor of Shizuoka prefecture in central Japan approved the construction of an ultra-fast maglev train line within the jurisdiction on July 7, 2026. This approval marks a significant advancement toward the operation of the maglev service after over ten years of deadlock.

The progress came following a change in local government leadership, which helped overcome previous environmental concerns that had stalled the project. The maglev train initiative is managed by the Central Japan Railway Company and aims to introduce a high-speed rail service in the region.

This development was reported by Nikkei Asia, citing sources in Tokyo and Shizuoka.
