Health workers at the Rwampara Treatment Center in Ituri, Congo, continue to battle a severe Ebola outbreak that has overwhelmed local hospitals and clinics. Since May 2026, more than 1,561 cases have been confirmed across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, with over 500 deaths reported.

Frontline health workers face dire conditions, including inadequate protective equipment and delayed pay, leading to strike threats in the outbreak’s epicenter, Ituri province. Seventeen health workers have died out of 75 infected. Community nurse Moise Bulabantu expressed fear, stating, “We don’t have protective equipment. We’re extremely afraid.” The current strain, Bundibugyo ebolavirus, has no effective treatments or vaccines.

Each Ebola Treatment Unit can serve 100 patients and played a crucial role in ending previous outbreaks in 2014. Proposals include a rapid U.S. military airlift to construct 15 to 20 such units overnight to contain the virus before it worsens.

President Trump has claimed he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to resolve global conflicts, including in the DRC. Quick and effective action to halt Ebola’s spread might strengthen his case with the Nobel Committee.
