Hong Kong experienced a 13% increase in tourist arrivals during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, welcoming approximately 26.71 million visitors. This growth was attributed to the city hosting more mega-events and the Airport Authority's efforts to add new destinations to boost tourism.
Tourism Minister Rosanna Law Shuk-pui reported that visitors from mainland China rose by 16%, while foreign tourists increased by 5%. She also highlighted a structural shift in visitor spending, moving away from a focus on shopping towards greater emphasis on cultural experiences.
Law noted that recent per capita spending by overnight visitors exceeded HK$5,000 (US$638), and same-day visitors spent more than HK$1,000. According to the Tourism Board, per capita spending by overnight visitors slightly increased from HK$5,490 in 2024 to HK$5,503 in 2025, with a forecasted rise to HK$5,530 in 2026.
These developments reflect Hong Kong's ongoing efforts to diversify its tourism appeal and enhance visitor experiences.
